Critical Kids is a nonprofit initiative dedicated to empowering children and teens through collaborative storytelling and tabletop roleplaying games. We use Dungeons & Dragons and similar creative systems as tools for confidence-building, social development, and lifelong memory-making.
Founded by homeschool educator and longtime Dungeon Master Carolyn Takos, Critical Kids began with one simple idea: every child deserves a place at the table. What started as a single campaign for one curious kid (and a reluctant sibling) has grown into four active game groups serving 24 kids of all ages. Our tables are full of laughter, imagination, and meaningful friendships.
Our sessions are built with intention. We foster a culture of encouragement, teamwork, and respectful play. Whether a child is shy, neurodivergent, socially advanced, or somewhere in between, they’re welcome here.
We believe that kids don’t just need activities—they need spaces where they can be themselves, build friendships, and tell stories that matter.
Our Mission
To provide children and teens with a safe, imaginative haven through collaborative storytelling and tabletop roleplaying games. We use D&D adventures, creative projects, and mentorship to foster friendship, creativity, and critical life skills. Inspired by a personal journey of healing through play, our mission is to offer peace, connection, and purpose in a chaotic world—one story at a time.
